Now, the full story...this was NOT an easy task & one we have been dreading for months. He showed some interest a few months back & would sit on the potty & occasionally have success. Then, he decided that each time he would pee or poo in his diaper that he would say "not go pee pee on potty" or "not go poo poo on potty". We knew that this stubborness meant trouble. So, we put away everything to do with the potty & ignored him telling us each time he went in his diaper for a few weeks. I asked a friend about potty training (father of 4) & he recommended a book "Toilet Training in Less than a Day" (Azrin & Foxx). You know me, I need a plan...so, I read this book. I set a date (12/8/10) and started what was more like boot camp for both Graham & I. GaGa was so kind to keep Reagan for the first day and a half, so there would not be much distraction in the house.
After everyone left the house that day, I brought down a 3ft sock monkey, named Maxx. Maxx was wearing a diaper (as was G from the night before). Maxx said bye bye to his diapers & picked out a pair of undies. Then, it was Graham's turn. He was hesitant, but eventually went with it. Then, we had lots of drinks & treats at the table for both Maxx & Graham. They shared some kool aid, froot loops and other special treats that we don't usually have around the house. Maxx took his turn on the potty & had success - there was pee pee in there...(however, G caught on to my squirt bottle trick)...it was Graham's turn...again, super hesitant...he even said "mommy, squirt the water in there)...we did many drills, over & over...this was such a HARD day for both of us. That is all we focused on....we stressed that the undies needed to stay dry & that he now needs to pee pee & poo poo in the potty. I chose not to put him in a diaper or pull up for nap or bedtime....and he's done very well...by the end of day 1, I was exhausted, but had to keep with it...it was like after nap & after bedtime that he forgot some of the steps...so we had to practice (which he did not like)...Day 4 was a Saturday, Eric was home, and we decided to go out to lunch (first time out of the house without diapers was frightening)...we survived...he actually did pee & poo at the restaurant...but the whole day was a struggle because he was resisting sitting on the potty and holding it way too long...we stuck with it & it's only gotten better from there....he makes it through naps dry & about every other night is dry...
whew....
